GROVER Vintage USA 60s/70s 102N Guitar Tuners. From what I can tell, these are likely some kind of shelf find from a collector or forgotten stock from the back cabinet of an old music store. Thats really the only thing that explains this item in unused condition. And yes, you are reading correctly.
These are 3-on-a-side Grover USA 102 Nickel tuners from the 1960s or 70s; 12:1 gear ratio. Theyre New, never installed, in the original box, with all hardware in the little manilla envelope.I have photographed as best I can with my iPhone (My DSLR is unfortunately in the shop). To me, these look a little more shiny than what I think of as a modern nickel finish, but if these have been in an unopened box for 50+ years, they may indeed have not been susceptible to environmental oxidation (tarnish) like usual nickel tuners. These would be an ideal addition to many types of Vintage US guitars or restorations thereof, but in particular, 1960s to 70s Les Paul models and custom, L-5, ES 335, Gretsch 3118 or Martin D-28. I think my asking price is pretty much commensurate inline with what these tuners go for in used condition. Not to mention what the usual asking price is even in pretty trashed condition! Also, as you can see in the photos, though original, the box is in fair condition, but not much better than that, if youre interested to collect them as parts. Please feel free to ask any questions you may have; I will answer to the best of my ability ASAP. About USA Grover Tuners: The first Grover Rotomatic tuners to make their common appearance on Les Pauls were made in the USA. These have a nickname of'Milk Bottle' tuners, presumably because of the shape of the cast housing in the area surrounding the worm gear at the top. To the best of my understanding of what research has produced, Grover tuners with Pat Pend stamped on the face were the first iteration of these, appearing in the very late 1950s as loose, on some models of Les Pauls, Epiphones, Martins and GretschsIm sure others as well. I believe these are made throughout the 1960s in varying models, button shapes and finishes. The second iteration, produced starting in the mid/late 1960s were simply marked GROVER on the front of the tuner and USA on the back. The USA' lettering was no longer stamped into the gear cover, along with the'Pat Pend' lettering, USA' lettering was now cast into the back of the casing in raised lettering. The tuners I have listed here are this second type. On both types of tuners mentioned above, the word'Grover' is cast in raised letters on the front of the casing. Im not an expert in any of the subjects related to this itemI just have a 40+ year love of guitars, as much as the rest of you.
